Diggit Drupalextras

Hi,
I've just made my first Drupal site and while I was still working on it I password protected the directory by creating a user with a password on the control panel.
Now I'm sort of ready and I want anyone to be able to access the site without password, so I went back to control panel and unticked "Password protect this directory:".
When that didn't do the trick, I also deleted the user and edited the .htaccess file and cleared the cache in the browser.
But the authentication box keeps popping up when moving between pages. When you close the box, you can view the page, but it is still quite annoying!
I found quite a bit of info about how to password protect, but none on how to get rid of it!
