Need to password protect a directory

http://drupal.org

We have a directory that has been password protected for some time. The password protection worked until we installed Drupal.

The site was just upgraded to Drupal (we made the switch this past weekend), but this directory will remain for some time until the client gets the content moved (several other directories are staying as well, but they aren't protected).

The non-protected directories are working. I edited the .htaccess file so that it will pick up .htm files as well and you can view the pages in the directory without having to go to index.htm.

The password protected directory is not working. All we get is a page not found error.

If I remove the .htaccess file that is in the directory, you can access the folder without issue (no log-in needed).

I've verified several times that the content in the files is correct. I've even had cpanel redo the setting up of the protection and the new .htaccess file is exactly the same as the old one.

I tried the content protection module, but it isn't working either. Whenever you go to the page using that module, it redirects to another page (http://www.mydomain.org/contentprotector/files/) which also gives a page not found error.

Obviously the issue here is somehow .htaccess related since the directory works when it isn't there, but doesn't when it is there.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
