This is a presentation done on November 2nd, 2009 for the Kitchener Waterloo Linux Users Group on Linux toolbox for monitoring and performance.
Many tools are discussed, including: top, htop, atop, vmstat, netstat, ntop, vnstat, iostat, strace, systemtap, oprofile, apachetop, MySQL processlist, Munin, Awstats, and Google Analytics.

FOR DIRECTORIES AND SUBDIRECTORIES

owner: apache web server
group: group account name

permissions: 754 (rwxr-xr--)

FOR FILES INSIDE THE ABOVE DIRECTORIES

owner:apache web server
group: apache web server

permissions:664(rw-rw-r--)

Is it a security risk to have apache as the owner of files directory?

My installation:

Unbuntu 9.10 Server
Mysql 5.1
Apache 2.2.12

I'm having to set the Sites/default/files to 777 to get it to work. What user/group does Drupal use when writing to these files, then I can set the user and reduce the permissions. tried chown root.apache as suggested in a post I found, but got "invalid user root.apache" response.

I'm just out of reception class for Linux (and still in it for Drupal) so apologies if this is a dumb question.

Last week I gave a presentation to the Waterloo Drupal Users Group about Drupal 7. During the presentation, I gave demonstrations of Seven and Bartik, along with some of the other admin UI improvements. I also presented brief overviews of features and APIs relevant to developers and designers.
