How to choose a hosting environment

Hello. I'm a Drupal newbie and I will start working on my first Drupal project very soon. I'm building an intranet for a client (I know I might be in over my head with such a big first project, but how else do you learn, right?). Only around 100 people will be using it daily, spread out over a few cities, via vpn.

I'm in a position where I can tell the hosting partner to set up whatever I want for my client. Any recommendations or warnings? I understand Linux/Unix is preferred over Windows, is there anything else I should know or consider?

Hello,

I have a drupal project that I want to start hosting and publishing online.

I have few questions here (and please bear with me till the end bcause this is the 1st time I use hosting):

1. My project was built on Windows. I thought about hosting on Linux because most of the hosting companies have drupal, ldap, mail, apache on Linux. And this is my area of expertise. So my question is: Is it easy to migrate my project to Linux provided that Iinstall the same modules as in WIndows?

I’m looking at buying hosting with 1and1 as my friend recommended them, he develops sites in PHP though he doesn’t develop in Drupal. A few people on here seem to use them with a few problems but they seem to have documented them. I have a few noob questions

We have a client that uses a particular hosting service. They seem to be mostly Microsoft-based, but they list that they also support:

Red Hat Linux 7.0+, Red Hat Enterprise 2.1+, SuSe Enterprise Linux, Solaris 2.6+, HP-UX 11.0+

If they ask which OS we prefer, what do you recommend?

And yes, if the client will agree, I'll gladly move to a preferred Drupal/Linux specialist server host, but that may not be a choice.

So, if you HAD to pick from one of the above, what would it be?
