CMMi – A crash course – Introduction to Dev 1.3

http://www.tekritisoftware.com

CMMI is an acronym for “Capability Maturity Model Integrated.” The last word basically means that CMMI is a fusion of best practices from a number of different capability maturity models that were eventually combined into a single model that is reminicent of the CMM.

Maturity means that whatever the company is doing, the company does it in a way that is well-documented, where everyone knows what is expected of them and perform accordingly, where performance is not dependent on heroes, and where decisions are made on proper analysis of the situation.

Qt: Tint alphatransparent PNG

http://milianw.de

Let’s assume you want to display the logo of your company in your Qt app. Most probably that logo has just single color with an alpha channel. But: Having the color hard coded in the image is not nice, there are users (like me!) out there, who use a custom (dark!) color scheme. Meaning: If your logo is black/dark and assumes a bright background and you just embed it blindly in your app, I probably won’t see it since the background will be dark in my case.

Here is a solution for the simple case of a mono-colored PNG with an alpha channel which I came up with:

VTune and KDE

http://milianw.de

Hey all,

been some time since I blogged last time. My TODO list is ever increasing and I took my day job at KDAB up again. Among others, I attended a marketing talk by Edmund Preiss. He actually made that marketing talk interesting, not least by his huge knowledge in the business, thanks to ~20 years of working for Intel. Probably the most important info I got out of it is this:

VTune is available free-of-charge under a non-commercial license

Yes, you heard right. Take these links:

Sad truth is: I’m swamped with work currently. Today I sat down and finished the last protocol of a university lab course, so at least that is done for now.

KDevelop 4.1.2 released

http://milianw.de

Good news everyone, part 1 for today:

I’m happy to announce the immediate availability of KDevelop 4.1.2, a pure bug fix release without new features. Anyone using the 4.1 branch is urged to upgrade to this new version as soon as possible. Keep in mind that if you are using KDE 4.6 or higher, you need the 4.2 branch. This release works fine with KDE 4.4 or 4.5 though.

Note: This is - probably - the last release in this branch. We are now concentrating on 4.2 and what will become 4.3 eventually.

If you are using KDevelop 4.1 and want to use one of the Quanta plugins, like XML or CSS language support or XDebug or Crossfire integration, checkout the 4.1 branch.

Hello dear lazyweb,

I have a problem that I could not solve nor find help by my usual paths. I’m speaking about a deadlock on shutdown I get sometimes with what will become KDevelop 4.1. You can find a backtrace in this bug report:

https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=239032

The thing is this: Apparently some global QMutex is getting destroyed by the exit handler but the call to __pthread_cond_destroy does not return.

KDevelop 4.1 Beta 2 will be omitted, stay tuned for Beta 3

Hey everyone.

I was on a spontaneous trip last week and missed the Beta 2 release. Apol took over but my instructions where not clear enough and the packages where totally screwed up (the tags pointed to code in master, no the 4.1 branch).

I’m in the process of fixing things up and will create tarballs for Beta 3 and announce it to packagers later today.

Lets hope the actual release for users out there can happen later this week.

Sorry again, bye.

Beware of KDevelop Master and KDELibs 4.5.1 or lower

Hey all,

please don’t use KDevelop master with KDELibs 4.5.1 or lower. Katepart in that version misses a crucial commit that makes KDevelop crash. It is fixed for 4.5.2. In the meantime you have on of the following options:

  1. Build kate from sources
  2. Switch to the stable branches, i.e.: KDevplatform 1.1, KDevelop 4.1, PHP 1.1, …
  3. wait for the 4.5.2 release

bye

Short GSOC 2010 Note

Hey all,

before I go on a short one-week vacation, I wanted to leave you a short note about the outcome of my GSOC, where I tried to revive the Quanta+ brand.

First up, I passed, many thanks to my mentor Andras Mantia. But well, it’s not like I got that for free. In a first estimation I did about 500 commits to Quanta, PHP and KDevplatform in the last three months. So I hope you all agree that I deserve the Google money :)

But lets talk about what I planned to achieve and what I actually achieved:

As I announced on the kde-core-devel mailing list, I planned to improve Dr Konqi for a long time, as for me as a developer it is an invaluable tool. Well, yesterday I sat down and implemented the first two things which I wanted for a long time:

Scroll to KCrash

Once the backtrace got loaded, Dr Konqi will automatically scroll to the line that contains [KCrash Handler]. No need to find that manually anymore. Awesome :)

We haven’t got any slides and only prepared roughly yesterday, but we decided just to show KDevelop 4 in action. Lets hope that there will be something in there for any interested KDE developer.

I’ll definitely show some assistants again, since apparently many people still ignore them even though they are imo one of the best features we have.

So come to room I at 12:15 :)
