Virtual Hosting and Multisite install

http://drupal.org

I have a question regarding Virtual Hosting and how it comes into play with multisite configurations.

I am setting up a basic development site with a multisite, multiple database configuration.

So far I just have "dlsdrupal.org" and "sub.dlsdrupal.org", under the "sites" directory in the drupal installation. I am running this on a Linux platform with a Mysql database backend with an Apache Web Server.

I was getting some error messages related to apache when setting up Name based virtual hosting, but noticed that I did not need virtual hosting to get my drupal site and subsite to work. Because of how the settings.php file strips the web site URL's, it would seem that Virtual Hosting is not necessary. When I went to each URL, Drupal knew which site I needed.

So, how does Virtual Hosting come into play with Drupal in light of the fact that Drupal will take a URL and "strip it" to determine which directory in the "sites" directory to serve from? Seems like Virtual Hosting is somewhat unecesary, but I am probably wrong about this.
